Welcome to Zanshin Karate Academy's website. Our aim is to teach practical karate for the modern world, we cover Dunstable and the surrounding ares. All our instructors are DBS checked, fully insured and first aid trained. Zanshin Karate Academy is affiliated to the British Combat Karate Association.

CHIEF INSTRUCTOR
Sensei Brian Bates 5th dan has been involved in martial arts since the age of nine. Starting shotokan karate with a local karate club affiliated to the SKI. Brian had a brief time out during his teenage years and resumed training with Bukonkai Karate International at the age of nineteen.
During his time with BKI Brian entered many regional and national tournaments often being placed in the top three for kata and kumite.
Brian also practices Aikijujutsu and gained his 3rd dan in December 2022. In 2019 he started studying Urban Combatives, a principle based method of self protection.
Brian likes to draw influence from diverse sources and regularly attends open karate seminars with some of the countries top instructors.

In 2015 Brian decided to form Zanshin Karate Academy as he felt his own studies had started to lean more towards the understanding and practical application of kata. Karate is a deep rooted part of Brian's life and he is passionate about passing on the rewards of karate training.
